Smart on Crime: A New Era of Bipartisan Criminal Justice Reform

Description:  This Feb. 20 symposium invited leading experts to dissect the shortcomings of the current criminal justice system and suggest improvements, with a special focus on the role of executive clemency and the power of pardon. Panelists included former Maryland Governor Robert Ehrlich Jr., former U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese III, Virginia Congressman Bobby Scott, and Margaret Love, who served as the U.S. Pardon Attorney in the 1990s.  The symposium also provided the occasion for the announcement of “The CUA Law/Ehrlich Partnership on Clemency," the country’s first law school-based clinic devoted to the research and study of executive clemency and the power of pardon.
